JESUS IS GOD
THE DOCTRINE DEFINED
1. (John 20:28 KJV) And Thomas answered and said unto him,
My Lord and my God.
What think ye of Christ? That is the great central
question, the is the vital question. And the most fundamental
question concerning the person of Christ is, is Jesus Christ
really God? Not merely is He Divine, but is He actually God?
When I was a boy, to say you believed in the Divinity of
Christ, meant that you believed in the real Deity of Christ,
that you believed that Jesus was actually a Divine Person,
that He was God. It no longer means that. (R. A. Torrey, THE
FUNDAMENTALS OF DOCTRINES OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, 1918
George H. Doran Company, P. 74)
WHAT ABOUT THE CLAIMS THAT JESUS MADE ABOUT HIMSELF?
2. (John 14:6 KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by
me.
3. (Acts 4:12 KJV) Neither is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved.
The Church is being erroded by spiritual AIDS, and no one
seems to notice or care. "Christians should just respect
other religions and not try to convert them to accept
Jesus" is a lie that will bring certain damnation for
unsaved millions. (Rod Parsley, HOLINESS, LIVING LEAVEN FREE,
Results Publishing, P. 24)
HEAVEN OR HELL
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DOCTRINE
4. (John 8:24 KJV) I said therefore unto you, that ye shall
die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he,
ye shall die in your sins.
5. (Exodus 3:14 KJV) And God said unto Moses, I
AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children
of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
The I AM statement in John 8:24 is a most urgent
warning to those who knowingly deny who Jesus claimed to be.
Just as Yahweh confronted the rebellious people Israel in the
Old Testament to believe "that I AM", Jesus confronts
the rebellious leaders of Israel in John 8:24. ...Jesus is
Yahweh the Son...He then warns of the consequence of denying who
He claimed to be... A defective view of Christ, a denial of the
Biblical view of Christ, makes it impossible for one to be a
follower of the Biblical Christ. (Stephen Tsoukalas, KNOWING
CHRIST IN THE CHALLENGE OF HERESY, 1999 University Press of
America, Pgs. 21-22)
TAUGHT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
6. (Isaiah 7:14 KJV) Therefore the Lord
himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
7. (Matthew 1:23 KJV) Behold, a virgin shall
be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall
call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with
us.
8. (Micah 5:2 KJV) But thou, Bethlehem
Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah,
yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be
ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old,
from everlasting.
9. (Isaiah 40:3 KJV) The voice of him that
crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make
straight in the desert a highway for our God.
10. (Matthew 3:3 KJV) For this is he that was
spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one
crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make
his paths straight.
TAUGHT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
11. (John 10:30-33 KJV) I and my Father are
one. {31} Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
{32} Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you
from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? {33}
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee
not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man,
makest thyself God.
12. (Hebrews 1:8 KJV) But unto the Son he
saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of
righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
13. (Acts 20:28 KJV) Take heed therefore unto
yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy
Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God,
which he hath purchased with his own blood.
14. (1 Timothy 3:16 KJV) And without
controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of
angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world,
received up into glory.
15. (Jude 1:25 KJV) To the only wise God our
Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now
and for ever. Amen.
16. (Colossians 2:9 KJV) For in him dwelleth
all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
17. (Philippians 2:6 KJV) Who, being in the
form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
THE SCRIPTURE THAT IS MOST OFTEN PERVERTED BY
CULTS
18. (John 1:1 KJV) In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The translation "the Word was God"
has been challenged by the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who
translate it, "the Word was a God," implying that
the Word was simply a heavenly being but not fully
divine...However, their interpretation has been followed by no
recognized Greek scholar anywhere, for it is commonly known
that the sentence follows regular rule of Greek grammar, and
the absence of the definite article merely indicates that
"God" is the predicate rather than the subject of
the sentence....of course, if John had wanted to say,
"The Word was a god", it would have been written
that way. (Wayne Gruden, SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY, 1994
Inter-Varsity Press, P. 234)
THE TITLE "SON OF GOD" SHOWS THAT
JESUS WAS DIVINE
19. (Isaiah 9:6 KJV) For unto us a child is
born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon
his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful,
Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince
of Peace.
20. (John 3:16 KJV) For God so loved the
world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
21. (John 5:17-18 KJV) But Jesus answered
them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. {18} Therefore
the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had
broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father,
making himself equal with God.
22. (1 John 5:20 KJV) And we know that the Son
of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we
may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true,
even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and
eternal life.
JESUS DOES WHAT ONLY GOD CAN DO
JESUS THE CREATOR
23. (John 1:3 KJV) All things were made by
him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
24. (Colossians 1:16 KJV) For by him were all
things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth,
visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions,
or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him,
and for him:
25. (Hebrews 1:2 KJV) Hath in these last days
spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all
things, by whom also he made the worlds;
PRESERVES AND SUSTAINS ALL THINGS
26. (Colossians 1:17 KJV) And he is before all
things, and by him all things consist.
FORGIVES SIN
27. (Mark 2:4-12 KJV) And when they could not
come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof
where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down
the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. {5} When Jesus saw
their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins
be forgiven thee. {6} But there were certain of the scribes
sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, {7} Why doth
this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God
only? {8} And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit
that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them,
Why reason ye these things in your hearts? {9} Whether is it
easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven
thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? {10}
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth
to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) {11} I
say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into
thine house. {12} And immediately he arose, took up the bed,
and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all
amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this
fashion.
JUDGES THE WORLD
28. (John 5:22-23 KJV) For the Father judgeth
no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: {23}
That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the
Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father
which hath sent him.
HE ACCEPTS WORSHIP
29. (Luke 24:52 KJV) And they worshipped him,
and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
30. (Matthew 28:9 KJV) And as they went to
tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail.
And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
HE IS THE MEDIATOR
A MEDIATOR MUST BE THE EQUAL OF EITHER
OF THE TWO PARTIES BETWEEN WHOM HE MEDIATES
31. (Job 9:32-33 NASB) "For He is not a
man as I am that I may answer Him, That we may go to court
together. {33} "There is no umpire between us, Who may
lay his hand upon us both.
32. (1 Timothy 2:5 KJV) For there is one God,
and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
THE GREATEST PROOF OF THE DEITY OF CHRIST
33. (John 10:10 KJV) The thief cometh not, but
for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they
might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
The supreme proof to every Christian of the
deity of his Lord is then his own inner experience of the
transforming power of his Lord upon the heart and life. Not
more surely does he who feels the present warmth of the sun
know that the sun exists, than he who has experienced the
re-creative power of the Lord know Him to be his Lord and his
God. Here is, perhaps we may say the most convincing proof to
every Christian of the deity of Christ; (Benjamin B. Warfield,
THE FUNDAMENTALS, 1993 Baker Books, Pgs. 245-246,
Volume II, Chapter 10 - The Deity of Christ)
(Genesis 1:26-27 KJV) And God said, Let us make man
in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the
fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle,
and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth
upon the earth. {27} So God created man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Notes:
On Scripture #4. Notice he is in
italics. That was not in the original text. Jesus was actually
saying he was the "I AM" as in Scripture # 5.
Scripture # 10, when LORD is all in caps it
means it is a Tetragramation or it means YAWEH.
(John 1:1-14 KJV) In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. {2}
The same was in the beginning with God. {3} All things were
made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was
made. {4} In him was life; and the life was the light of
men. {5} And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness
comprehended it not. {6} There was a man sent from God,
whose name was John. {7} The same came for a witness, to
bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might
believe. {8} He was not that Light, but was sent to bear
witness of that Light. {9} That was the true Light, which
lighteth every man that cometh into the world. {10} He was
in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world
knew him not. {11} He came unto his own, and his own
received him not. {12} But as many as received him, to them
gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that
believe on his name: {13} Which were born, not of blood, nor
of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of
God. {14} And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,
(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
